    • The host thinks the Bucks game could feature the usual starters with Huff in place of Zubac, and a bench of Quenton Jackson, Oubre, Toppin, Nance and Walker plus the two-way players. at 28:15
    • In the first half Jalen Slawson was the first reserve wing in, ahead of Jarace Walker, while Carlisle sorted things out after Zubac's injury. In the second half Slawson did not come in before Walker. All 11 available players played. at 24:48
    • Jarace Walker had 3 assists, 7 rebounds and 1 turnover, scored 6 points on 7 shots and was +24. The host says his defense was better. at 25:43
    • Host's view: the progress he and others hoped Jarace Walker would show hasn't appeared through three games, but the team's injuries will give him chances. at 26:27

Got really loud in here after the Toppin dunk-and-1, but then the Mavs got a layup and Jarace Walker dribbled the ball off his foot out of bounds and Dallas is back up 27 in a. blink.

Per the NBA starters page, Jarace Walker will start at small forward tonight even with Aaron Nesmith back. Other four: Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, Pascal Siakam Ivica Zubac, are the same. Mavs starters: Kyrie Irving, Max Christie, P.J. Washington, Cooper Flagg, Gafford

    • Tony East: Jarace Walker started. Aaron Nesmith and Kelly Oubre Jr came off the bench. The host called this weird and says it wasn't asked about with Carlisle postgame. at 8:39
    • Tony East: On a pick-and-roll the host believes was meant to be a switch, Haliburton switched but Jarace Walker did not, leaving a wide-open shooter. at 5:19
    • Tony East: Host says Jarace Walker played poorly: turnovers, missed shots, poor rebounding. He says the goodwill from a strong preseason is gone. at 8:57
    • Tony East: Host analysis: Walker's career pattern is flashes followed by games that make him hard to trust. He has had different roles in the preseason and in the first two games. The host cautions it's only been two games. at 17:02
    • Tony East: With Walker in the starting group, Dallas scored 33 points in nine minutes and opened 6-for-10 from three. at 9:08
    • Tony East: The fifth player with that core group varied. at 13:18

    • Minutes that would have gone to Jarace Walker and Ben Sheppard went to Quenton Jackson instead. at 27:24
    • Jarace Walker built a lot of buzz in preseason with sharp passing and good decisions, but struggled in the opener: 1-of-6 from the field, missed all three twos, and had more turnovers than assists. at 25:50
    • Host critique of Walker on defense: he is on his toes too much and needs to play on his feet so he can change direction faster, especially against the Pelicans' finesse perimeter players. The host says this is not a new issue. at 26:22
    • Host expects Walker to be better in the next game and is not concerned about one game. at 27:14

  • Podcast Locked On Pacers · 5 points ·
    • The host sees Oubre as roughly the eighth-best player, setting the bar that Walker and Sheppard must clear to earn a playoff-rotation spot. at 9:36
    • Siakam spent the game battling Zion Williamson. In the second quarter Zubac and Jarace Walker each guarded Zion for a possession, which the host says was to keep Siakam from wearing down. The host also says Siakam struggled at the foul line again. at 24:14
    • Carlisle angrily subbed Oubre out after his third bad foul in the first half and brought in Jarace Walker. at 30:54
    • Jarace Walker had four turnovers, many of them ugly. He was good on the glass but couldn't hit shots the way he did in the preseason. The host wonders whether his preseason was a mirage. at 31:49
    • The host says Walker's preseason earned him minutes over Ben Sheppard, and both played in this game. The coaches kept bringing Walker in despite his struggles. at 31:55

    • A preseason lineup of Nembhard, Kelly Oubre Jr, Walker, Obi Toppin at center, and Siakam went on a quick 10-0 run against Minnesota. Caitlin adds that Nembhard can guard the point of attack in such groups. at 21:19
    • Caitlin says Walker looked more viable as a rotation player in preseason: more consistent, fewer turnovers, more friction on defense, and better screening technique. at 6:27
    • Rick Carlisle (reported): Tony says Rick Carlisle praised Walker for his focus on cleaner passing after the first preseason game, in Ames. Walker's past passes had been lazy or one-handed. at 6:50

    • JJ says Jarace Walker got hurt early in the preseason, so he couldn't be seen over the four games. Before the injury, it felt like Walker would have every opportunity to be the 7th or 8th man. JJ hopes Walker is part of things when the season starts so he doesn't fall behind. at 30:14

    • Tony East: Before preseason, the host thought Jarace Walker should get the final rotation spot, with Ben Sheppard as a possible challenger. at 25:21
    • Tony East: Braden Smith averaged 5.5 assists per game. The host thinks he was second on the team in preseason assists, behind Jarace Walker. at 28:51

    • Tony East: Jarace Walker has had two excellent preseason games, which Tony calls the biggest non-starter storyline of the preseason. Tony notes it is only two games and that consistency has been a big problem for him. at 18:30
    • Tony East: Walker's passing in the Ames game was special, and he followed it with another good game, a level of consistency Tony calls rare for him. at 25:32
    • Tyler thinks Walker is very important to the season's potential because he gives depth and 'optionality' (a Kevin Pritchard term) to cover injuries and play different positions and styles. at 19:02
    • Tyler says some of Carlisle's early comments about Walker, about learning to fit in, gave him pause because they sounded like how Carlisle used to talk about Mathurin. He also notes Carlisle has praised Walker. at 19:34
    • Rick Carlisle (paraphrased); free-agency note and interpretation by Tony East (reported): Tony paraphrases Carlisle saying that doing those things gets you paid a lot of money. Tony adds that Walker will be a free agent next year and reads Carlisle's comments as aimed at long-term development. at 21:10
    • Tony East: Tony says Walker was in the Pacers' playoff rotation before he got hurt two years ago. at 20:47
    • Tyler recalls that around February of last year Walker was averaging roughly 14 points and 8 rebounds efficiently. He also says Walker's defense has come in flashes, with good possessions followed by lapses. at 24:29
    • Tony East: Tony says Walker hasn't been a good NBA defender yet but has size. With the East adding big wings, turning him into even a slightly above-average defender would matter a lot. at 22:30

    • Nesmith, Nembhard, Jarace Walker and T.J. McConnell did not play. The host says 'there were some injuries' but does not say which player had which issue. at 14:01
    • Ben Sheppard started at the two because Walker, Nesmith and Nembhard did not play. at 26:24
    • Host thought the open starting spot would come down to Walker vs. Sheppard and says it now feels settled. In a game Walker missed, Sheppard did not do nearly enough to change that. at 18:16

    • Tony East: East's examples: Nembhard has filled in well at point guard with the bench groups, Kelly Oubre Jr has had a few nice drives to the rim, and Jarace Walker has passed very well. at 5:49
    • Tony East: East's opinion: there's no reason McConnell needs to be overloaded with bench shot creation this season. He questions whether Walker's level of play will hold up into the season. at 6:40
    • Tony East: East says Jarace Walker has been way better than Ben Sheppard. Walker came into camp ahead and is now way ahead. Sheppard would have to be spectacular to change that, unless the Pacers go small on opening night. at 17:58
    • Tony East: Watch item: how Jarace Walker, who has been really great this preseason, handles stronger defensive pressure. East notes Walker was spectacular in the Pacers' win in OKC last year. at 28:56
