How it works
Hoop Dossier is a free NBA hub with no ads: tonight’s injuries, lineups, stats and live scores in one fast place, every fact with its source and time.
The data
Where does the data come from, and how fast does it update?
Primary sources, collected automatically: the official NBA injury report, the league's lineup feed (expected and confirmed starters, the inactive list), ESPN's public scoreboard, box scores and play-by-play, RotoWire, the beat writers and national insiders on X and Bluesky who cover each team, and the team podcasts that cover them. On game days the official report is fetched every 15 minutes from 11 AM Eastern and the news sources every few minutes; while games are on, the scoreboard is read every 10 seconds. Every item shows when it was posted and where it came from. The games page, game previews and Favorites refresh themselves while they are open. Source status shows when each source was last checked.
How much history is behind the numbers?
5 seasons of play-by-play: 2.5 million plays across 5,300+ games, 140,000+ box-score lines and 229,000+ lineup stints that say which five players were on the floor for every stretch of every game, plus the officials assigned to each one. Every stat, split and chart on the site is computed on our own server from those stored plays and box scores, the same way every time, so every number can be traced to the games behind it.
How do you track injuries and lineups?
Three feeds, one page. We fetch every edition of the official injury report as the league posts it, keep each one and compare it with the edition before, so a status change is caught on the next check, never more than 15 minutes after the league posts it; the league's lineup feed gives the confirmed starters and inactives; and the beat writers' posts sit beside both, each with its time. Injuries & Lineups shows every listed player with his status and the time of his source, a strip of what changed in the last three hours, each team's likely five from its latest box score until the official lineup replaces it, and Rotation watch for the minutes and lineup changes that follow. Every game page carries the same report for its two teams.
What happens when a source is late or wrong?
You can see it. Every fact carries its source and the time it was posted, every section says when it was built, and a live page that has not heard from the feed says so instead of pretending. Source status lists each source's last successful check. When something is still wrong, the Report a problem with this page link in the footer sends us the page you were on, and we fix the data, not just the page.
The model
What are the purple numbers?
Anything our model estimates is set in purple with a dotted underline: a team's win chance, a projected score, projected minutes, a live win probability, how a player is pacing against his projection. Everything else on the site is a reported fact, so the color tells you at a glance which is which. Prediction tools are off by default; the switch in the top bar turns the purple numbers on, and your choice is saved in this browser. They are still in testing: estimates, not picks, and never betting advice.
How does the model learn from every game?
Before every game the model locks in its numbers; the projection that counts is the last one issued before tip, and nothing is recomputed after the fact. When the final box score lands, every locked projection is graded against what happened and every miss is kept. A new model version runs beside the old one on games neither has seen, and replaces it only after it has done better there, so every update is earned on real games, not hindsight. With Prediction tools on, a finished game’s Recap shows its report card: what we projected before tip and what happened.
Do the projections account for tonight’s injuries and lineups?
The projections use the official injury report, the league's lineup feed and the reporters' posts. Each card says when its estimate was issued. An unavailable or outdated estimate stays hidden until it can be updated.
How does the live win probability work?
With Prediction tools on, a game in progress shows our win probability. It starts from the projection locked before tip and changes with the score, the clock and who has the ball, next to how each player is pacing against his projection. Every line of the live page is written by our own rules from the structured feed: no copied prose, nothing from a third party on the page.
Do you tell me what to bet?
No. The purple numbers are estimates still in testing. What you get is the whole picture: the estimate, when it was last issued, what moved it since the last one, which questionable players could still change it and what it does not know yet. The free site stays facts and estimates, never betting advice.
The site
What is the Screener?
The Screener answers "how does he do in this situation?" from menus: pick a player, a stat and a situation such as road games, a back-to-back or a teammate being out, and you get one sentence with the answer, the shift against his usual numbers and every game behind it, over five seasons of history. Seasons are never averaged together: the shift is measured within each season and then combined, and the answer says in how many seasons it held. Past games only, never a prediction, and every screen is a link you can share.
What is Favorites?
Tap ☆ Follow on any player or team. ★ Favorites then shows their next games, what changed since you last looked (each change with its source and time) and their live scores while they play. Follows stay in this browser: no account and no sign-up.
Can I use Hoop Dossier with my AI assistant?
Yes, free and without a key. Add Hoop Dossier to Claude, ChatGPT or Grok as a connector and your assistant answers from our facts: injuries, lineups, stats and splits, each with a link to the page it came from. It serves facts only, never lines or model estimates. Connect to AI has the steps for each app.
Why is the site so fast, and where are the ads?
There are no ads and nothing from a third party on any page: every page is plain HTML built on our own server, with one stylesheet, our own small scripts and no outside fonts, trackers or embeds. So it opens in a blink on a phone and works as an app from your home screen (how to add it). We keep counts of visits, never who you are (privacy). We would rather you come back because the pages are good.
